Possibility of a Meeting Between Tareque Rahman and the Chief Adviser in London
Interim Government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Acting Chairman of BNP Tareque Rahman (file photo).Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, has departed Dhaka for the United Kingdom on a four-day official visit. The Emirates Airlines flight carrying the Chief Adviser and his entourage left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today, Monday, at 7:30 PM, according to the Chief Adviser’s press wing.
During the visit, the Chief advisor is scheduled to meet King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where he will receive the "King Charles Harmony Award" from the monarch. A bilateral meeting is also expected between the Chief advisor and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Additionally, he will participate in a dialogue organized by the UK-based policy institute Chatham House.
A source close to the government told News24 that there is a possibility of a meeting between the Chief Adviser and Tareque Rahman, the acting chairman of BNP who resides in London. A senior BNP source also confirmed the possibility of such a meeting to Prothom Alo. If everything goes as planned, the meeting between Professor Muhammad Yunus and Tareque Rahman may take place on June 13.
In an interview with a media outlet today, the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said, “Tareque Rahman is the leader of a major political party in Bangladesh. A meeting with him during the Chief Adviser’s London visit would send a positive message for the country. But whether the meeting will happen has not yet been decided. We will understand once we are in London.”
During this visit, particular emphasis will be placed on gaining UK support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition. The issue of repatriating laundered money will also be a priority for Bangladesh. The Chief Adviser is scheduled to return to the country on June 14.
